Drug Rehabilitation Process at the Centre

Drug Addiction is not just a physical dependence on a chemical substance. It affects an individual at different levels -

  • Physically
  • Emotionally
  • Mentally
  • Spiritually

Therefore Drug Addiction should be addressed at all these levels. Our methodology is based on the 12 step program originally concieved by Alcoholics Anonymous and then adopted by Narcotics Anonymous. The simplicity of this program is that the only pre-qualification required from the patient is a desire to acknowledge that Drug addiction is a problem that is making him/her lose control over his life and a desire to rid themselves of this affliction.

For this, we conduct a residential program at our rehabilitation centre near Mumbai. This program has a typical duration of 3-6 months depending on the severity of the addiction and the physical, mental and emotional condition of the patient.

The residential treatment program comprises of 2 major stages

  1. Detoxification.
  2. Rehabilitation based on Relaxation and Realization.

These 2 stages must be backed up by a follow-up process that ensures continual practice and support system that ensures that the patient remains clean and sober over the long run.

It has been observed that most patients will rid themselves of this addiction. Details of each stage are presented below.

1. Detoxification

Detoxification is the primary stage where all traces of the chemical accumulated over the period of addiction must be removed from the patient's body. This is a sensitive stage where the patient encounters withdrawal symptoms which manifest themselves physically in the form of headaches, stomach aches, fever, cold, lack of appetite and lack of sleep. A patient may also show behavioral patterns of anxiety, depression, frustration, resentment and anger.

Therefore this stage must be carried out at the rehabilitation centre where we our panel of physicians and psychiatrists provide examination and medication on a regular basis. Also, our counselors are available for emotional support and guidance round the clock. So, we request the families and well wishers of the patients to rest easy. We are fully committed to comfort the patient in this period that can last between 15 to 45 days.

2. Drug Rehabilitation

Drug Rehabilitation is the process where bad Attitudes, Behaviors and Characteristics acquired during the period of addiction are steadily removed and replaced with qualities like honesty, punctuality, humbleness, tolerance and compassion. This is achieved by practicing and implementing the tools of recovery based on the 12 step program at the rehabilitation centre. The process of realization takes some time (about 3-4 months) but the results stay ingrained for life. This is achieved by following a daily routine that comprises of

1. Work Therapy
2. Meditation& Yoga
3. Relaxation
4. 12 step program
5. AA/NA meetings
6. Recreation
7. Individual counseling
8. Group counseling
9. Family counseling
10. Regular medical monitoring
11. Non-intrusive medication

Steadily but surely, the patient re-cultivates the skills required to live a normal life without resorting to the crutch of addiction and that is where the miracle happens. The persons outlook to life takes a turn for the better.

All through this process, the individual is guided by our counselors at our rehabilitation centre.

And when ready, the patient leaves the rehabilitation centre to play his role as a productive citizen and a family person in the world.

Follow ups

When the patient is re-introduced to the outside world, it may take him some time to re-orient himself to old and new challenges. We encourage the patient to visit the rehabilitation center on weekends to stay in touch with the counselors and the routine and discipline.

We also encourage the patient to call up and seek guidance from our counselors when faced with disturbing or tempting circumstances. This helps the patient control any impulse that may lead to a relapse of addiction.

We counsel the family to give the patient understanding and time for a few weeks/months and help him readjust his priorities, schedules and of course his work/career.

We also recommend that he regularly  visits local Narcotic Anonymous meetings so he can share his experiences with a peer group that serves as a support system to help him stay clean.

And of course, he will always be in our prayers and our hearts.
